Subject: [MUSEUM-L] PhD in Museum Studies
Dear Colleagues,
Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts is conducting a feasibility study of potential interest in a Ph.D. program in Museum Studies. We are seeking input from museum professionals, museum studies faculty members, and students/graduates of museum studies programs. Please consider the four questions below and respond directly to me (rather than to the list) by October 16th.
Cordially,
Margaret A. Lindauer, Associate Professor
Museum Studies Coordinator
Department of Art History
Virginia Commonwealth University

1) Among the universities offering a Ph.D. in Museum Studies, none is currently located in the United States. Do you believe such a Ph.D. program should be offered at a university in the US?
__X__ yes Oh Yes! It would be great, and I would be interested in enrolling!
2) Is there a particular aspect of museum work or research that a Ph.D. program should address?
____ museum education
____ curatorial studies
____ administration
____ sociology of museums
____ historical and/or textual analysis of museum trends
All of these are appropriate tracks. I think they should all be offered but I would be most interested in curatorial studies and adinistration (all of them really).
3) For which primary clientele should such a Ph.D. program be designed?
____ recent baccalaureates
____ recent graduates of post-baccalaureate degrees or certificates
____ mid-career museum professionals
____ people who hold or intend to hold upper-level administrative positions in museums
____ people who intend to administer and/or teach in a Museum Studies program
Again, all of the above. I am a post-graduate and am very interested but I am sure there are professionals from all of those categories who would be very interested. Post-graduates and museum professionals would seem the most likely candidates.
4) Which universities/departments in the US currently offer a Museum Studies track within a discipline-specific PhD program?
I can only think of Universities with a Masters programs (Middle Tennessee State, George Washington, University of Pennsylvania, and one in Oregon).
We welcome any other comments you would like to offer.
