The 2006 Cooperstown Graduate Association Conference, "Folk Art - New
Interpretations," will be held on October 27-28, 2006, at The New York
State Historical Association in Cooperstown, NY.

This conference brings together experts in the field of folk art, many
of whom were trained in the Cooperstown museum studies and folk
culture programs. They come from art museums, historical societies,
universities, and public folklore collections to share new discoveries
and introduce important resources for further study in the field.
Their topics range from quilts to beadwork to woodwork to paintings.
Like the late Dr. Bruce Buckley, who established both the museum
studies program and the American folk culture program, they explore
the rich ethnic traditions that inspired the artists they study. In a
new twist, they present the complex interplay between popular American
culture and traditional ethnic practices among groups such as the
Pennsylvania Germans, Mardi Gras Indians, and
Hungarian immigrants. They analyze how a medium such as paint can be
used by folk artists of all stripes to embellish canvases, wooden
objects, and even the built environment.

The conference also includes a series of optional hands-on workshops
on topics ranging from hearth-oven bread baking to fantasy pumpkin
carving.
