General Summary (Purpose) of Position
The Director of Educational Programs for the Paul Tsongas Center oversees
the development and implementation of a variety of educational programs and
activities to support the education mission of the Paul Tsongas Center which is
an interagency collaboration, comprised of the University of Massachusetts
Lowell, Lowell National Historical Park, Middlesex Community College, and the
Lowell Plan, Inc.
Established in 1987 as the Tsongas Industrial History Center, the education
mission of the Paul Tsongas Center is to engage teachers and students in the
study of industrial history and the interrelated effects of immigration, science,
and technology on individuals and communities. More than 60,000 students
annually visit the Tsongas Center’s Boott Cotton Mills location in downtown
Lowell to participate in hands-on, thematic workshops and tours of the
National Historical Park. The Center also sponsors summer camps, conducts
teacher workshops, both on site and via distance learning, and serves as a
regional professional development site for National Park staff.
Anticipated 12 month salary range is $80,000 to $90,000, with benefits.
Examples of Duties:
1. Developing educational goals in conjunction with the Executive Director and
other members of the interagency collaboration by:
• Overseeing the development of educational activities, programs, summer
camps, teacher workshops to assist teachers and students in the study of
industrial history and its interrelated effects.
• Monitoring and evaluating the performance of staff, activities and programs
in meeting the educational mission of the Paul Tsongas Center.
2. Provide leadership in management of educational programs and activities by:
• Hiring and training staff and volunteers to carry out activities, programs, etc.
• Supervising the activities of staff and volunteers.
• Developing and devising new approaches to hands-on educational activities.
• Monitoring expenditures for cost-effective programming.
• Writing grants to generate external revenue.
• Supporting activities for the acquisition of donations.
3. Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:
• Building effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by
freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
• Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to
all requests for service and information.
• Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds,
nationalities, and roles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum of a master’s degree, with a doctoral degree preferred, in
educational leadership, museum education, or related field.
• Ten years of relevant experience, including successful teaching and
supervising methods of experiential education in K-12 and/or museum settings,
and developing new curricula.
• Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking.
• Strong interpersonal and management skills, including evidence of successful
collaboration with diverse constituents.
• Ability to inspire innovative ideas and motivate others.
• Scholarly record of professional publications and successful grant writing.
• Expertise in use of technology for teaching and learning, including online
education..
• Familiarity with Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
• University teaching experience is desirable.
Supervision Received: Reports to Tsongas Center Executive Director; until the
Director position is filled reports to Dean of the Graduate School of Education
with supervising counsel from the Superintendent of Lowell National Historical
Park
