I go to New York a fair amount both for business and personal reasons and I
always book via Orbitz, hotels.com and Travelocity. The sites allow you to
specify the part of the city where you want to look-- midtown, uptown, upper
east side, upper west side, soho, etc. They will list cost and availability
in specific hotels with links to their websites so you can choose exactly
where you want to stay. I have never had to pay more than $160 including
tax (room tax in NYC is very high) and have stayed in some very interesting
boutique hotels. I have never had a bad experience doing this. If you hit a
week when demand is low for some reason, you can get even lower prices.
It's possible to get a lower rate on Priceline but you can't choose your
hotel.

You might try Club Quarters Hotels, there are three in Manhattan. You
have to be a member but anyone who works for a nonprofit can apply. I
stated in one in Chicago, the rooms are small but very nicely appointed
as is the rest of the faclities, in 2003 my room was around $125.

I live within easy commuting distance of Manhattan, so I seldom stay
in town. But... a couple of years ago I had a great [and affordable]
stay at the Hotel Beacon on the Upper West Side [Broadway at 75th],
in a very good suite with bedroom, full bath, kitchenette and a small
living room. It's convenient for the Beacon Theatre [music venue],
Lincoln Center, AMNH, Bard Graduate Center, and the Met, the Frick
and the Upper East Side museums are a cross-town bus ride away. And
Central Park is more wonderful than ever.
