DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION – STANLEY MUSEUM, KINGFIELD, MAINE
Job description: The Director of Education plans, directs and
supervises the interpretive programs of the Stanley Museum within the
parameters of the museum’s mission and strategic plan, insuring quality
program delivery in reaching strategic goals and objectives.
Requirements: Along with administrative strength and experience, the
Director of Education should have a Bachelor’s degree in American or
Art History with a minor in Education, or an advanced degree in Museum
Studies and experience in educational programming at a museum. A
Master’s degree is preferred but not required.
Management and compensation: The Director of Education reports to the
C.E.O./Executive Director. This is an opportunity to exercise
leadership in programming and museum management in a small museum
serving an audience ranging from international to the underserved
rural. Salary commensurate with experience; benefits included. EOE.
Location: The Stanley Museum is located in Kingfield, the birthplace of
the Stanleys, a town of 1,200 in western Maine and one of Maine’s most
picturesque mountain villages. The area is known for Sugarloaf USA ski
area, the Rangeley Lakes, fishing, hunting and inland Maine’s quiet,
rural, mountainous beauty. It is one hour from Augusta, the state
capital, two hours from Portland, four hours each from Boston, Montreal
and Quebec City.
Collection and Program focus: Best known for the Stanley Steamer
automobile, the Stanley Museum also collects, exhibits and programs
around Stanley art, from F.E. Stanley’s invention of the airbrush and
his fine art portraits to his sister Chansonetta Stanley Emmons’s
remarkable photography and her daughter’s impressionist paintings; the
brothers’ Stanley Dry Plate Co. history; violins made by three family
members; the intellectual and social history of the era; and the
creativity and Yankee ingenuity for which the Stanley family is noted.
