The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), located at the Getty Center in Los
Angeles, California, is an operating program of the J. Paul Getty Trust
that works internationally to advance conservation of the visual arts and
cultural heritage. Programmatic activities include scientific research,
education and training, dissemination of information and field projects.
The staff of the Institute are comprised of approximately 90 full-time
scientists, conservators, architects, archaeologists, administrative
support staff, etc. The operating budget for the GCI is approximately $13

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Administration, the Manager of
Administration will direct day-to-day operations and management of GCI-wide
services related to staffing and staff-related issues, administrative
support, process improvement and policy implementation:
*Work closely with J. Paul Getty Trust Human Resources and GCI program
staff to analyze new or changing jobs; develops job descriptions, oversees
all aspects of recruiting and placing new staff. Oversee the annual
performance evaluation and salary review process.
*Work closely with Human Resources to provides formal and informal
counseling services for staff: counsel supervisors with their employees;
counsel staff members with work problems; assist in career planning;
arbitrate between supervisors and employees; serve as a mediator in
disciplinary action.
*Enhance operational management and administrative support provided to the
programmatic work of the GCI. Work closely with administrative support
staff and program/project staff to ensure that their work is able to move
forward while Trust policies are maintained.
*Implement Getty-wide policies and procedures at the GCI and
establish/improve administrative operating practices. Maintain frequent
and open communication with J. Paul Getty Trust administrative departments
and share information with GCI staff.
The successful candidate will be a creative but analytical thinker,
innovative but pragmatic, and sensitive to role of visual arts in culture.
This individual must possess a keen intellect and have a fundamental
affinity for dealing with complex issues where many criteria matter but to
varying degrees. An intuitive sense for the whole enterprise must be
combined with a practical, project orientation. The Manager must have
excellent written and oral communication skills. The individual must be a
facilitator who has excellent people management skills and the ability to
manage multiple projects simultaneously. The successful candidate must be
an interdisciplinary thinker and be able to synthesize as well as analyze.
S/he will be a good listener and will be seen as sympathetic to and capable
of resolving a wide variety of employee concerns. The ideal candidate will
have high standards and be self-motivated, flexible, optimistic, dedicated,
and diplomatic. The Manager should be a problem-solver with the ability to
be responsive to short-term concerns while developing long-range
strategies.
A Bachelor's degree in business or humanities or an equivalent combination
of training and experience required. This position requires 3-6 years of
supervisory and process/project management experience in an institutional
setting required. Experience working in cultural or non-profit
organizations required. Basic knowledge and experience with accounting,
purchasing, cost benefit analysis, project control, human resource
management in a medium-sized, non-profit or cultural institution is
required. A demonstrated interest in and sensitivity to academic and
cultural programs is vital.
Starting salary range is $60,000 - $70,000 commensurate with experience.
