Please contact Director Nancy McCoy of the Orcas Island Historical Museum,
at [log in to unmask] Nancy spent several years on adaptive reuse
planning and rehabilitation of a lovely 1912 two-room schoolhouse on rural
Lopez Island, WA, and currently is Museum Director in a complex of
adaptively reused historic log buildings on Orcas Island. She carefully
documented the entire process of the Port Stanley schoolhouse rehab, and can
tell you about the various studies and reports that went into it. She
recently received a commendation for her years of dedicated work on this
lovely property, which serves as a satellite exhibit and rental meeting
space in our community.

Subject: feasibility study of museum vs adaptive reuse
Hello all,
I am taking measures to preserve an early 20th-century school building and a
circa 1890 log cabin in my community that I would like to turn into museums,
or possibly attempt adaptive reuse of the school building while making the
cabin a rural-life museum. I've read "Starting Right," which gave me some
very good pointers, but I thought I would ask the museum community at large
about feasibility studies and the possibilty of adaptive reuse. Have any of
you helped on the ground level of museum creation and dealt with these
issues?
What was the best avenue for you, and if you did a feasibility study, how
long
did it take you to complete it?
Many thanks,
William Denius
