Please be a little careful about generalizations. There are many
Americans who don't feel that the right of protest should be limited to
subjects or actions that can be viewed as pablum by the average citizen.
Much of the hyteria over flag-burning is from right-wing super patriots
who are much more interested in showing how much more patriotic they are
than anyone else than they are in affirming free speech (or free
political expression if you prefer).
Obviously my opinion and not necessarily that of my institution.
