John, it would be simpler and let more light through if you used
Mylar/Melinex for your points. It's completely transparent, it's inert,
and it would shield your glass shelves from scratches. Most felt sold
today in craft stores is polyester, although since it probably comes
from who knows where I wouldn't trust it. I also would not trust colors
to be either inert or colorfast unless they were tested. Another option,
if you wanted some cushioning, would be 1/8" Ethafoam sheet cut into
shapes. It is translucent and, like the Mylar, inert.
