I have a foot in three professions - museums, libraries and computers - though
my PhD is in physics. Most of my professional knowledge has come from reading
and on-the-job learning.
 
It seems to me that the "Dr" label is a help in giving the impression that you
can work and think independently and write coherently, but that the actual
subject of your PhD is not a very significant factor.
 
One of my friends told me that it helped him get good service at his local
garage, because they reckoned that the "doctor" would be unable to attend to
his patients unless they fixed his car quickly. :-)
