Look for references to Hawaiians and Kanakas in those maritime trade
archives, they were fantastic sailors and often crewed on American and
British merchant ships.

Have your teacher pal contact PEM--the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem
MA. She can also check their library--the Phillips--on line. New
England saw many, many Asians prior to the Revolutionary war due to
maritime trade. THe PEM was initially founded to celebrate/cerebrate
that trade. It is also a VERY COOL museum. (I seem to also recall
some inter-marriage portraits. I'll check it out next time I am at
the PEM.)
