We have a scarf, made of a light, gauzy material, and the pattern is made by "pinching" little bits of the fabric up,which are then colored to form patterns, etc.

Sounds to me like a Japanese technique call shibori; googling "shibori" will bring up a bunch of sites with descriptions of the process, predominant colours, and pattern examples.
