We have recently received a request from an archives patron for permission
to scan a limited number of photographs from our archives. Our photo policy
provides only for the staff to copy photographs (or have them professionally
printed), for which there is a both a use fee and use agreement, and a fee
for photographic services. I see many potential trouble spots if including
patron scanning under the use agreement, including the capability for
unlimited manipulation of the archived image once the patron has it on their
drive.
Have others dealt with scanning by patrons? What would you advise?
Naturally this user felt that because he was bringing his own equipment,
there would be no fees or restrictions...
