From the time I was a teenager, I always had two
things I wanted to do: 1) to be in Rio at Carnivale,
and 2) to be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Alas,
I'll be 53 in late November, and I never got to go. I
wanted to suck up the sights, sounds, smells, and
great history that was New Orleans. It's not looking
good that a lot of that will be restored---though
never say never.
So now, it's up to those of you who visited the glory
that was New Orleans to help us know how wonderful it
was. If you were lucky enough to experience Louisiana
in all its finest, why not tell us about the museums,
the state parks, the staff, and any other memories you
may have as a form of "oral history". Let's celebrate
the good, while we struggle to restore what can be
salvaged.
Of course our first thoughts are with the people.
That goes without saying. But it's the history of
people long ago that we want to remember too.
In addition, have any of you given thought to perhaps
doing mini-Mardi Gras at your institution as a way of
remembering part of the rich history of our injured
state?
For now, I'm glad I'm been planning to attend
Gasparilla in late January. That's Tampa's version of
Mardi Gras. For more info, see
http://www.gasparillapiratefest.com/ or
http://gasparilla.tbo.com/ Will I see you there?
