Hi Rhett - You might want to contact Margo Carlock, Executive Director,
Virginia Association of Museums. She can be reached at
[log in to unmask] or (804) 788-5821. IIRC, presenters (excepting
perhaps a keynote speaker) do NOT get free attendance and the policy is
clearly stated in all materials. As for how they follow up with non-payers,
I'm sure Margo can provide details. Good luck cleaning this up...pity some
folks don't understand that non-profit membership organizations are just
that...non-profit!
Good luck! Best, VivianLea

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] advice about conference non-payers
Hi, all. I'm wondering if any of you that belong to academic organizations
can offer any advice about policy. Last year at MAPACA we had 2 people who
presented but didn't pay. One was a professor and we had to threaten to
tell his department head to secure payment about 3 months after the
conference. The other is/was a graduate student who still hasn't paid. In
fact, her department's administrator reprimanded me for contacting him
about this even though she presented as a representative of both the
department and the university.
We're having a board meeting this weekend. I'd like to address this issue
and set some form of policy about what to do. This has probably happened in
the past and we caught it last year because of on-line registration.
We allow on-site late registration and presenters to register on-line but
send in a check. These two procedures are how the two managed to present
without paying at the time of the conference. I know, it's only 2 people.
We need a policy though.
What do other organizations do in this case? Thanks and apologies for
cross postings.
Rett Lorance, Ph.D.
