Greetings Allan et al.:

My apologies for snipping one short paragraph, but there is an important
point to be made:

Isn't it fair to say that an art center/gallery/museum (or other art venue)
can invite an artist to participate and state upfront there is no
compensation, leaving the decision up to the artist to accept or reject the
opportunity to exhibit their artwork.

One can presume that an exhibition functions like an advertisement. Viewers
can discover the means to contact an artist (or a gallery) directly if
interested in potential acquisition as a result of seeing the artwork on
display at an art venue. After all, we all know how expensive advertising
can be, or renting one's own store-front. So inclusion in an exhibition
results in "targeted marketing," as most venues have membership mailing
lists and/or (in the case of university/college venues) a captive audience .
. . and most artists, barring Chihuly and Kincade, can't afford target
marketing.

Best wishes, sincerely,
