My experience with paints in theater sets also suggests the pigment in the can may weakening over time as well. The light factor, however is probably the biggest issue you'll face since the paint from the can will still be fresher, even with a decrease in the pigment, than what will be on the wall.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Painted Walls
We are experiencing something new with the paint on our gallery walls. In the past when we switched out exhibitions, we merely retouched the walls where the hangers had been. Now, we are finding that if we do so, the paint doesn't match (even if from the same can). Does anyone have any ideas why?
Thanks for your help.
