I agree with Shana. In the upper levels here the personnel tend to be
men. Also, I attended the executive director's breakfast at the AASLH
and it was primarily all men. At my table of eight people- only two
were women.

It's interesting that you say that. My perception has been quite the
opposite. I worked for an arts institution in the New York metro area
and I
found that there were many women in the field, but that the
directors/executives were predominantly men--especially in larger
institutions. It was always a HUGE deal when a woman was appointed to a
senior curator position or executive directorship--all over the trade
publications. Of course I'm mostly referring to art museums as that was
the
area in which I was most engaged.
Shyra--I hope these comments are of use to you. I think this topic is a
pretty interesting one. Over the years, I've often had conversations
with
colleagues about it as part of a larger discussion of salaries and
benefits
for museum employees verses the public sector, as well as the disparity
of
compensation between senior executives of major arts institutions and
their
employees.
