Dear Pete,
I came across good books and articels about exhibition labels. But nobody seems to read them...I register nearly everywhere the same, good old "poor labels. But before speaking about poor labels, the first question is:
Are there labels at all?
Then:
Where are they hidden?
Most of the poor labels nowadays are caused by the architects (one style in my artwork, please), designers (all grey on grey walls, please) und museum staff not being able to control these groups. Why? Because they haven' t read the books and some of them are still not thinking in the dimensions of the visitor.
I remarked several ones in new exhibitions produced with new techniques but being rubbed of quite soon.
I saw poor labels with 3 words on it explaining the "context".
Once in Bavaria I saw a square opening in the pavement, covered by a glass pane. Some excavations must been done here (may an old cellar or heating system - I couldn't find out) Why? Because there was so much humidity under the pane that I was not able to read the label under the pane, even by going down on my knees...
I stop telling terrible stories. But it seems to be a story without end.
