Update on Fanshawe Pioneer Village
Representatives of Fanshawe Pioneer Village's Board of Directors and the FPV's Executive Director Sheila Johnson will meet again with senior staff of the City of London this week, in a bid to save FPV from closure. FPV will celebrate it's 46th season this year, however systemic under funding has taken its toll and after 10 years of unsuccessfully pursuing core funding from the City of London, the FPV Board has decided that it may well have no option at this point, than to close the site.
On February 7th, City Council directed City Staff to meet with FPV representatives in an effort to find 'other' funding. At the same time, FPV Staff were asked to provide a report outlining the costs (tangible and intangible) of closing the site and 'clearing it back to grass'.
London City Council is expected to make a final decision on FPV's funding request for annual operating funding in the amount of $350,000 per year and $1 million in capital costs over 4 years (seed funding to begin a desperately needed building rehabilitation program) at their March 7th, 2005 meeting.
In the meantime. FPV's volunteers have founded an Advocacy Corps, which will stage a Heritage Rally at London City Hall on Heritage Day, 21st of February, 2005. The focus of this event will be government disregard for heritage issues and systemic under funding of the heritage sector.
