To the contrary we had one and it was repetedly breaking down, loosing
its charge, we went through a compresser on the average of every 18
months.

It wasn't just us! Of the thread, there were two places considering a
Liebert of some sort and two who hadn't had any problems.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Liebert HVAC issues
We have an engineer designed Liebert HVAC system in our textile storage
area, about 4 years old. I am fast approaching the conclusion that the
collection would be safer if I propped the door to the room open and let
it float with the rest of the building.
Does anyone else out there have constant maintenance issues with their
Liebert systems? The Carrier system in our other high-end storage room,
while not perfect, operates much better.
Thanks
Dan

We, too, were sold a bill of goods with a Liebert system that serves our
archives. I couldn't tell you how many times I have mopped up flooding
from the thing. It never has even come close to keeping stable temp and
humidity and we are only asking for 50% at 70 degrees F, not the
impossible. Last week the aluminum cap that covers the heat lamps warped
so badly that we had to get the metal shop to fabricate a new one of
stainless. It has been one thing after another. The design is horrible
and our HVAC guys would love to boot it off the back dock. It is now on
a weekly maintenance schedule. I have swaddled the entire system with
absorbent snakes and keep the mechanical room door open and the light on
so I can check on it every time I walk down the hall. I don't understand
why engineers are spec'ing these units... Ours has been an expensive
disaster.

We, too, have two Liebert units. A unit that feeds our special exhibit
gallery and our crate storage. The one in crate storage did not drain
properly and damaged the vinyl tile in storage. Now, we have it propped
up on 2 by 4's and works properly. Our other unit keeps destroying the
humidifier canisters. We had the rep. out to take a look and he said
the unit is undersized for our application and wants to install a new
humidifying system and service contract for $18,500!

I sometimes feel the same. Ours is very prone to losing its ability to
maintain humidity due to mineral build up on one of its internal bits.
No matter how much filtering of the water they do, it does not seem to
prevent the problem. Very frustrating.

We have had a Liebert Challenger 3000 as the main air-handler in
collections storage for over 10 years and outside of normal maintenance
have found it to work fine maintaining both temperature and humidity.
Maintenance is important. The only trouble we had was because it wasn't
performed.

Lori-
Ours is about 4 years old. The problems began about 4 months after
installation. I wish you well.

We have a newly installed Liebert system (less than a year). So far, we
have not had any major problems. Is this something to look forward to?
How old are the systems everyone speaks of?
