In my reply (see below) I mentioned that individuals on DSL or Cable modems
need to have their WAP/firewalls/routers configured correctly to use VoIP,
but I didn't have time to explain. Voice packets need priority so they won't
get delayed and dropped. The typical rate is 20 to 30 packets per second.
Since Australia is so far away, a caller from the USA gets into issues with
the inherent delay related to the speed of light (186K Miles/sec). The
firewall must allow traffic on the ports used for the VoIP software, of
course.
It might be worth noting that the threat of services like Skype is what
drove down the price of long distance in the recent decade, and bankrupted
telecom giants like AT&T.

I don't see many compelling reasons for Americans to go through the trouble
of setting it up and learning to use it... at this point. Maybe I've missed
something, though.
Now, having a SkypeIn number *may* be worthwhile for some people *if* it's a
cheaper route than having regular telephone numbers in each area code or
country, or cheaper than having a toll-free number.
