GENERAL Students 'depressed' by state of American Indian artifactsMay
17, 2005By Terry Rombeck (Contact)Lawrence, KS - Carla Feathers says she
often leaves the American Indian collections at Kansas University
feeling depressed. Some of the more than 5,000 artifacts in the
collection are shoved into boxes. Items from tribes that were
historically enemy tribes are sometimes placed next to each other, which
some believe disrupts the spirits of the items. The collections
generally aren't taken out for fresh air or for special ceremonies, as
is custom in American Indian cultures.

 DISCOVERIES/CONSULTATIONS/EXCAVATIONS Dig unearths history,
questionsMay 30, 2005By Ben Kieckhefer, Reno Gazette-JournalReno, NV -
The whole quandary has come from the more than 25,000 artifacts he and
his team of archeologists unearthed from a major prehistoric camp
discovered while digging Reno's downtown train trench. . . . Under
his agreement with the local Indian groups to repatriate the remains, he
was allowed to inspect them, but there was no date analysis performed,
no attempts to extract DNA and no photographs were taken. All the
remains, including all the associated burial materials, were repatriated
and buried back at the train trench.
