Dear Museum and Anthropology Professionals,
Since the AAA meetings have just ended and were located in Washington, DC,
I thought this would be a good time to contact you. I am writing in searh
of comments, critiques, essays, or suggestions about the National Museum
of the American Indian exhibitions.
I worked as a researcher in the curatorial department at the NMAI for
three years before heading to Cornell University for a PhD in Cultural
Anthropology. The focus of my research is the making of the Our Lives
gallery at the NMAI. I am conducting ethnography in three communities who
participated in the exhibition: the museum professionals in Washington,
DC; the Kalinago (or Carib) on Dominica Island; and, the urban Indian
community of Chicago (where I am currently located). I also was
responsible for the fieldwork with the Igloolik Inuit while working for
the museum.
If you have had the opportunity to see the NMAI (or the cultural resources
center), I would greatly appreciate it if you would like to share your
thoughts about the museum. If you haven't visited the museum, perhaps you
could comment on what you have heard people saying about it. I would very
much like to include the "scholar" perspective in my account and
understanding of the museum.
Please email me your comments if you are interested in participating (and
indicate if you would like to remain anonymous). If you have any
questions or concerns please contact me.
Thank you very much for your time--
Sincerely,
Jen Shannon
