The Park City Historical Society & Museum has an immediate opening for a
History and Heritage Collections intern. The successful candidate will
assist with the museum’s growing collection. The intern will become well-
versed in cataloguing, inventory, digital photography, basic conservation
and rehousing of the museum’s collection.
The museum collection, totaling more than 27,000 items, is remarkably
diverse in type and size, with objects as large as a stagecoach and as
fragile as the “Silver Queen’s” lace dresses. Specific collections
identified for the fall 2005 internship include an early twentieth century
mercantile and photographs taken by one of Park City’s most prolific
photographers, Kendall Webb. The museum is embarking on a major expansion
and renovation project. The History and Heritage intern will be involved
in preparing to relocate most of the collection in the next two years to
temporary off-site storage locations and will be exposed to the process of
creating a new storage facility.
The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills, a basic
knowledge and experience with artifact handling techniques, and some
understanding of museum management procedures. He or she must be able to
climb ladders and lift up to 40 lbs. A bachelor’s degree in History,
American Studies, Museum Studies, or in a closely related field is
required. Some graduate training in Museum Studies preferred.
Internships last from 8 to 10 weeks. The stipend for this internship is
$2,250 for 8 weeks (40 hrs/week). Stipend includes housing.
