Dear kasfurst,
We went through a similar issue. We chose to include our volunteers and
docents in the list, since it is not a large increase, and it is the least
of our membership benefits. Now that we have gone digital, our monthly
e-newsletter and periodic news flashes are free to anyone who signs up on
our website or registers at our front desk, whether or not they pay for a
membership. People who pay for memberships are given other benefits, such
as several annual mailings of catalogs and publications, t-shirts, and comp
admission to our gala events. It keeps them all informed(if they check
their e-mail consistently), and hopefully draws them in on a regular basis,
without costing us much in return. That seemed a good tradeoff, and it has
apparently made a difference in our numbers.

Dear List,
The organization I am associated with is discussing whether or not to
send free newsletters (usually reserved only for paying members) to
non-member volunteers. Some think this could be beneficial by making
volunteers feel a part of the organization. Others think it would
undermine the member benefits and that it would be difficult to
determine which volunteers qualified for the free newsletter: those who
work once a year or those who work a certain number of hours per year.
Membership rates are $25 at the Individual level and $40 at the Family
level. Do any of your sites offer free newsletters to non-member
volunteers? Any thoughts on this topic?
Thanks.
