CURATORIAL ASSOCIATE, HARVARD UNIVERSITY
Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), reporting to the Curator of Ornithology
In conjunction with the Department Curator and Manager of Collections
Operations, the Curatorial Associate (CA) will determine short- and
long-term collection priorities. In carrying out these priorities the CA
will manage and oversee collection upgrades; selection, training and
supervision of curatorial staff; curation of existing and new collections;
the input and updating of computerized specimen database; preparation and
monitoring of the departmental budget. The CA will assist in preparation
of grant proposals for collection improvement; participate in museum
initiatives; collaborate on projects with other MCZ collections and with
public programs of the Harvard Museum of Natural History (HMNH); and assist
the public with questions.
BA in biology or zoology; advanced degree in biological sciences with
emphasis in ornithology or natural history museum studies; 5-8 years of
curatorial experience in a bird collection (or equivalent); knowledge of
the systematic diversity in the group (taxonomy, distribution, abundance);
3-5 years of supervisory experience; demonstrated writing, public speaking,
and organizational skills; excellent computer skills, including database
management. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required, as
well as the ability to both work independently and in a busy team environment.
