Challenges to using VoIP...
~ Some companies filter out VoIP traffic through their firewalls.
~ Individuals on DSL or Cable modems need to have their
WAP/firewalls/routers configured correctly.
~ For some, it's just as easy (or easier) to use email or IM rather than
the phone.
~ Many IM clients include voice capabilities.
~ With VoIP, you're stuck at the computer, whereas cordless phones can be
carried all over the house or office.
~ For calls inside the continental US, "free" or unlimited long-distance
is pretty common, so cost isn't an issue for the bulk of calls.
~ VoIP isn't meant to replace land or mobile telephony service as it
cannot be used for emergencies.
I don't see many compelling reasons for Americans to go through the trouble
of setting it up and learning to use it... at this point. Maybe I've missed
something, though.
Now, having a SkypeIn number *may* be worthwhile for some people *if* it's a
cheaper route than having regular telephone numbers in each area code or
country, or cheaper than having a toll-free number.
