The destruction of the originals, in their original form, is something
that any museum needs to think very seriously about. Lots of newspaper
materials were discarded after microfilming (bad microfilming!) in the
60s-90s, and now exist in no other format. Gone. They can't even be
effectively digitized, now that the technology is available. Newspapers
are an incredible resource for historians.

and the Assault on Paper_. He's even started a foundation to rescue
newspapers.
