The Asian Art Museum, a premier San Francisco institution, is one of the
largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. The
museum’s magnificent and priceless collection of more than 14,000 objects
includes paintings, sculpture, ceramics, bronzes, jades and textiles,
exemplifying the artistic accomplishments of countries and cultures
throughout Asia. The museum relocated to an historic Civic Center building
which underwent a $170 million renovation to become the museum’s new home.

Reporting to the Director of Museum Services, the Head of Preparation will
work closely with curators, artists, conservators, registrars, and other
museum staff to produce exhibitions of the highest quality. S/he will
supervise the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of
exhibitions, and the preparation of objects to be exhibited.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE*
· Planning, prioritizing, and scheduling the work of the Preparation
department; developing and administering the departmental budget
· Supervising preparators and temporary art installers, and working
alongside them in the preparation of artwork and the installation and
de-installation of exhibitions and permanent collection rotations;
directing, supervising, and evaluating their work
· Managing and participating in the fabrication and installation of
exhibits insuring the highest quality within available resources
· Managing the ongoing monitoring of the condition and appearance of
permanent and temporary exhibit installations
· Maintenance and repair of tools and equipment; insuring adherence to
safe workplace practices and procedures in the operations of the
Preparation department and its workshop and in the handling of art

minimum qualifications
· Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
· Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the
preparation, construction, and installation of exhibit displays, including
at least two (2) years of supervisory and management experience; or an
equivalent combination of training and experience.
· Demonstrated successful experience in the management of major
projects; proven leadership and management skills.
· Knowledge and experience in using the standard tools, practices and
methods used in painting; rough and finish carpentry as well as cabinet
work; and the use and application of different materials such as various
kinds of lumber, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives.
· Knowledge of: art handling procedures for two-and three-dimensional
art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights, including the
rigging and movement of art; mountmaking principles, and lighting concepts.
· Strong time management and organizational skills.
· Ability to: direct, supervise, motivate, and evaluate staff; develop
and manage budgets; prepare cost estimates; make sound purchasing
decisions.
· Ability to lift and move heavy objects as required.
· Ability to: interpret working drawings; develop and implement design
concepts;
· Computer proficiency in spreadsheet and CAD highly desirable.

The appointment will be on a provisional basis to a vacant budgeted civil
service position. The provisional appointee will be required to succeed in
a civil service examination process in order to be considered for permanent
appointment.
