Full-Time Museum Educator
The New Jersey Historical Society is a statewide, private nonprofit
historical museum and library dedicated to preserving and interpreting the
intricate political, social, cultural and economic history of New Jersey.
Through exhibitions, publications, and programming, the Historical Society
examines what it means to live and work in New Jersey, the unique
contributions New Jerseyans make to the region and the country, and what
contributes to New Jersey’s distinct identity.
Through the history of New Jersey – a quintessentially American place –The
New Jersey Historical Society promotes exploration of our cultures, past and
present. As we challenge and inspire people to grow as learners and
thinkers, we strive to make a difference in their lives.
The Museum Educator reports directly to the Curator of Education. The
schedule of the Museum Educator will be 5 days/week, including Saturdays (2
per month).
Major Duties
* teach education programs for all ages and levels as needed
* assist education staff with library research and identifying resources for
education programs
* work on general department responsibilities such as keeping statistics,
program development, other related office responsibilities
* assist with development/execution of new programs and initiatives
Abilities and Skills
* an understanding of and familiarity with interactive teaching theory and
methods
* strong writing/communication and research skills
* solid understanding of and ability to apply age-appropriate activities and
programs in teaching
* self-motivation to achieve goals and complete projects individually and
with groups
* willingness to take responsibility for projects and see them through to
completion
* ability to work as a team member with staff, consultants, and other
collaborators
* flexibility to adapt to various situations
* respect for diversity
* good professional judgment
* establish and maintain positive relations with staff, community contacts,
groups of children and adults, teachers, museum educators, and the general
public
* sense of humor
The Museum Educator maintains collegial relationships with the entire staff
of the institution. S/he has excellent communication, administrative, and
interpersonal skills and is committed to the mission and vision of The New
Jersey Historical Society. S/he helps maintain a collegial working
environment and supports the core values as articulated in “Working at The
New Jersey Historical Society,” a document intended to nurture specific
values and attitudes in staff, including respect for diversity and
willingness to work in teams.
Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field; prior teaching/museum
experience; bilingual a plus.
