Well, I can tell you the official reason; its validity is, I suppose,
open to question. 'Realtor' is a registered trademark that is supposed to
be applied only to members of some real estate agent association or
another. Many style guides (Chicago, for instance, and I think AP as
well) suggest capping trademarks, and most editors and publications
follow the suggestion. While my guess is that the association would be
very upset to find non-members styling themselves as R[r]ealtors and
might even threaten legal action, the lower-case use of the term in a
newspaper or whatever would probably occasion only a polite, but firm,
'informational' letter. Best, David
