Andy,
I would fight for an alternative place for collections storage if at all
possible.
Remember:
1. Water seeks the lowest level - often basements are below the water table.
2. Also remember that when sewers back up - it's in the basement first!
3. You have to consider mold and mildew in a basement environment as well.
4. Basements are notorious for being places that allow ready ingress of all
sorts of
pests.
5. Consider object movement - is there a good path with wide hallways or the
right
ceiling height for the large objects in the collection? Is there a good
sized elevator
that runs to the basement? What is the path from the loading dock?
6. Do you want to work in a basement? Will this be a place where students,
scholars, or
historians will be working with the collections?
Cheers!
