Hello--
  If it's a choice between visiting Pompeii and visiting the Archeological
Museum in Naples, I 'd suggest Pompeii.  It's a wonder-filled, evocative
experience that transcends the traditional museum experience.  Try to
get a peek at the modern town of Pompeii, which is pretty bizarre--full
of kitsch in celebration of a miraculous appearance of the Virgin there
in the 1920s.  When I first visited rather a lot of years ago, the town,
which was devotedly fascist during WWII, was also full of tourist shops
devoted to the memory of dear Benito.  I suppose these have been cleared
out by now.  I've been there relatively recently, but these later times
were devoted to making sure the students didn't fall into any ancient
cisterns.
   By the way, I enjoy the travel requests/suggestions here.  Life is
sometimes more than shelving.
