When I supervised interns as an editor at university presses, I told
them that they should keep a file of copies of every piece of
writing they had a hand in generating (memos, dustjacket copy, forms,
notes on meetings, emails, reports). I also told them that I would
ask them at the end to draft a letter of recommendation for
themselves, outlining all the tasks and projects they had done as
interns, skills they had acquired, things they'd learned about the
world of publishing--to which I'd add the words of praise. Saved me a
lot of time on the recommendations and motivated them to think about
their work from a wider perspective.

PS I am copying all your comments to my daughter who has just started
her first internship (in fashion design). Thanks!
