Judging only by American law, there is a statute of
limitations on just about everything except murder.
The statute of limitations on theft is often four
years, and that can be extended to four years beyond
the point the theft is uncovered.
It's not that the Getty hid these things. In most
instances, they were displayed prominently for the
world to see, so that it can't be that this just
happened. The materials have been in the possession
of the Getty for decades.
So why now? Why now is it that these European nations
are claiming theft and demanding the return of the
artifacts, and why is the rest of the nation sitting
mum?
(Thoughts that came to my while cooking breakfast this morning.)
