Mary,
I have been in the process of developing a program for the Arizona
Historical Society called M.Y.C.E (Museum Youth Curator Experience). July of
2004 was the fourth year the program was in existence and the first year I
didn't teach it myself.
The program consists of Tucson area youth aged 13-18 coming together for
three intensive weeks in the summer and producing a museum exhibit that
stays up all year, until the next MYCE group comes. Student choose the
topic, do the research, select the artifacts, write the text labels and
construct the exhibit. They have access to all the Museum professionals.
At the end of the three weeks, they host a museum exhibit opening for the
public.
I don't know if this is the type of thing you're looking for, but if it is,
I'd LOVE to share my experiences with you.

Hello all,
As part of a service-learning study, I am collecting case stories about
collaborative projects that put students in charge of conducting research
and designing interpretive materials. Classes or individual students might
collaborate with a museum, visitor center, aquarium, national park - any
organization that provides educational information to the public.
Educational products might include such things as labels, signs or exhibits,
signed nature trails, educational brochures, guided tours, traveling
exhibits, docent services, educational websites, or special educational
events. Key criteria are that the students are 1) providing a needed
service, and 2) gaining knowledge and skills that support, and are supported
by, the curriculum in their classroom.
