Subject: [**SPAM**] Information on Observatories
My name is Nathalie Cort and I am interning at the Biltmore Estate in
Asheville, NC. I am researching the use of the observatory at Biltmore
and interested to know if there are any others historic sites
(particularly late nineteenth century) that have observatories as well.
The observatory at Biltmore is two stories with a vaulted ceiling, an
interior balcony (catwalk) that wraps around the entire room. From that
balcony/catwalk, you can exit onto two separate balconies. There are
small windows on the bottom floor and there is also a fire place.
I know many observatories were used to view the stars, but we believe
that this may not to be true with this observatory. The roofline, in
many ways, obscures a full view of the sky. The term "belvedere" seemed
to be a more accurate description of our room, but in the architectural
drawings it is labeled as an "observatory".
If you have any insight on this issue or have any references on
buildings/houses that may have a similar view please let me know.
Respectfully,
Nathalie Cort
