I confess that I'm a little confused by both the original question and some
of the responses. What exactly do you mean by the term "public art gallery?"
Are you making a distinction between an art "gallery" and a museum? Or does
the question simply contrast art museums with other kinds of museums? Yes,
"galleries" usually, or at least often, refer to art dealers' establishments.
Yet, as we know, many art museums, such as the National Gallery of Art in
Washington, use "gallery" in their names.
