I got my first post-graduate-school museum job by attending the AAM annual
meeting and scattering my resume about, and between interviews networking
like crazy. The networking was of the "stand around and listen in to
conversations and gradually edge my way in and introduce myself at an
appropriate moment" type. One of the formal interviews came through and I
spent 3 1/2 years at that job.
I got a great summer job while in graduate school by following a lead that
was posted on the bulletin board at the school.
Other jobs came my way by being open to possibilities, listening to trade
gossip about who was leaving and being bold in sending a resume for a job I
knew was going to open up very soon.
