Ah, the salary game. Basically, it boils down to a big, excuse the expression,
"pissing contest", and who blinks first.

The stock answer is NOT to give a salary requirement yourself but say that if
you are offered the position, you'll be happy to discuss salary at that time.
Salary discussions should not be a part of first round interviews. You should
try to get the interviewer to state a salary first which gives you the chance
to counter and might end you up with more money than you were going to ask for
in the first place. (It did in my case when my offer was about $10K more than
what I was going to ask for. Go me!)

Personally, I think salary ranges should be stated up front in the job
description. That way you know coming in what to expect and can save both you
and your interviewer time if the salary is too low for you to consider. Does
this ever happen? Usually not unless you are applying for a government-type
position.
