BOOK PUBLICATION ANNOUNCEMENT WITH "EARLY BIRD" ORDER FORM AT BOTTOM OF E-MAIL
January 12, 2004
Dear Friends of the Water Works,
The Water Works Conservancy, Inc. is pleased to announce the publication of
The Hackensack Water Works by Clifford W. Zink, a 265-page hard cover book on
the history of the Historic Hackensack Water Works and the development of pure
water treatment and delivery.
Partially funded through research and printing grants from the New Jersey
Historical Commission, The Hackensack Water Works is the nation’s first
comprehensive publication about an historic water works. It tells the compelling
story of an "American Treasure," a rare surviving example of water works
architecture and engineering from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The first
half of the book is the story through documents, letters, and historic archives
of the site from 1882 to World War II. The second half of the book tells the
story from World War II to the present through the fascinating oral histories
of the people who managed and operated the site’s pumping station and
filtration plant, monitored the quality of the water, or lived and grew up around the
site.
Printed in landscape format, the book includes a 16-page four-color insert of
photographs of the site and over 203 black and white visuals - drawings,
maps, and both historic and modern photographs. WWC also printed 100 copies of a
Signed and Numbered Limited Edition, which comes in its own case with a
sewn-in silk ribbon place marker and a special velum page with a drawing of the
Allis Chalmer Old Number 7.
The book’s author is an architectural historian with a master’s degree in
Historic Preservation from Columbia University. He grew up in Westwood and
graduated from Bergen Catholic High School. Mr. Zink is currently director of the
New Jersey Dutch Buildings Research Project, funded by a 2001 Historical
Commission grant.
The WWC is launching the book with a Book Signing and Celebration as part of
the Oradell Arts and Business Coalition’s WINTERFEST 2004, on Thursday,
February 5, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., hosted by the Oradell Public Library, 375
Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ. The author will discuss the book and sign
copies. Some of the Living History Interviewees will also be in attendance.
