When I moved to Miami/Miami Beach a decade ago it had already been dog
friendly for years, well before Paris Hilton and her dog. Restaurants
welcome them in their outdoor dining areas and even provide doggie bowls
of water, the city provides dog water fountains in popular areas, and
there are countless boutiques that cater specifically to dogs and their
owners. Gallery openings often feature dogs of all sizes, from Yorkie to
Great Dane. One gallery owner I know included a picture of her Yorkie on
the invitations for every show that she held that year.
There are also birds and reptiles strolling around with their owners...
That being said, I don't know of a single museum in the area that allows
animals of any kind because of the potential risks to other visitors and
collections.

I find this an interesting change in social behavior...years ago, did
people
tote their little dogs around? The dog toting celebutantes seem to
have
made this an acceptable accessory...a little dog. As a matter of fact,
many people seem to want to display their dog luggage (Louis Vuitton, as
I live and breathe) as much as coddle dear little Fifi. I very much want
to bring our bearded dragon out in public in my purse. He is pleasant,
quiet, and extremely clean...but quite reptilian! I have a sinking
feeling, as much as I feel dogs have their place (as do cats, lizards
and all other household pets) that we will have to begin to adjust to
the totable dog phenomenon. Giving up to the Paris Hiltonians, Candace

i commend ross and others who show a little judgement - a little common
sense - rather than blindly following some dictate. of course it
depends on the institution and what your curatorial concerns are. in
ours, where we cultivate a more informal atmosphere and where attendance
is modest, a small dog might be welcome. i would hope our staff, tho
few, would be able to make the right call. and the question is how many
people would come in with a bird on their shoulder? isn't it better to
say, "how can i help?" rather than immediately say "these are our rules.
tough."
my favorite dumb rule was not allowing helium balloons into an informal
science center because, heaven forbid, they might get away and would
require a staff person to get them down. a little tape on a stick sure
beat saying, 'sorry kid, got to confiscate that balloon.'
