ICHIM 04: DIGITAL CULTURE AND HERITAGE
Berlin, August 30v - Sept 2nd, 2004
OVERVIEW
ICHIM 04, the Eighth International Cultural Heritage Informatics Meeting will take place from August 30 to Sept. 2, 2004 at the
"Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt", Berlin (HKW: <www.hkw.de>).
ICHIM 04 "DIGITAL CULTURE AND HERITAGE" will address key issues in the digitilization of the heritage and the emergence of new
digital culture forms: creation and dissemination of virtual scientific and cultural heritage, education and research, digital
artistic creations.
The pre-conference day will offer exclusive seminars and workshops for advanced training. It will be followed by three days of
selected papers, panels, presentations, debates, demonstrations and social events.
Curators, computer scientists, museum professionals, administrators, publishers, educators, entrepreneurs and artists from around
the world will come to share their experiences, learn new methods and forge new partnerships. They will discuss five major themes:
1. The political, economic, legal and technical frameworks for institutions and digital projects supporting cultural diversity.
2. Management and technological strategies for digitization of cultural heritage and for digital innovation (state of the art,
exemplary applications, presentation and audit of projects, issues of skills and training);
3. Production, dissemination, exploitation and enrichment of digital assets (from scientific intranet systems to popularization
webTV channels and digital libraries: practical, technical and critical approaches, best practices and experiments);
4. Interactivity on-screen and for exhibition spaces (from nomadic devices to immersive installations and virtual galleries: case
study, evaluation
of the public assessment, theory and research);
5. Contemporary art creation and the emergence of a digital culture (Curation, preservation, exhibition, performance, dissemination,
critique, and curriculum ).
Parallel to the conferences, we anticipate the presentations of projects by cultural institutions, private and government programs
in search of partners [DEMO-POSTER], and demonstrations of commercial products and services intended for the cultural heritage
institutions and companies market.
We also organize with HKW a specific "science & arts research labs exhibition" [SARLE] showing the best programs currently
developped worldwide in the fields of multimedia, A.I., robotics, ergonomics, interactivity and visual arts. This exhibition will be
open 1 day exclusively to ICHIM attendees and 2 days to the public.
