The James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History at he University of Minnesota
published a pamphlet entitled "The Making of the Bell Museum Dioramas,"
n.d., by Don Luce, Janet Pelley and Kevin Williams. I got my copy in the
early '90s; not sure if they still carry it.
You might also contact the Milwaukee Public Museum, home of the first
natural history diorama in North America (a beaver pond by Carl Akeley),
and The Field Museum in Chicago (where Akeley went after Milwaukee). I'm
certain the Field's newsletter has carried several articles on Akeley over
the years. (Akeley also wrote a book, but I don't know how much it talks
about his dioramas.)
