There is a lot of discussion in the Museum L archives concerning Study,
Education (your work-study) collection versus permanent collection.

I would create 2 seperate collections with distinct modes of
numbering.  "Work-study" collections will be expected to detiorate over
time, so it seems they would not fit the intention of "preservation"
necessary in a permanent collection.
