Hi Theresa-
I am doing my master's thesis on membership programs in small museums, so I
have picked up a few ideas that may be helpful.
First, make sure that you have ASKED all those who have had contact with the
organization. Obvious, I know, but you'd be suprised at how many people
will say "O- I never thought of joining- sure I will." We have a new
director here and he makes a point at every program we have and at every
Rotary or community talk he gives to say- "How many of you are dues-paying
members of the Vermont Historical Society? Thank you for your support- and
we encourage the rest of you to do the same- brochures are in the back of
the room." It's made a difference.
Dig a little deeper- ask your board to bring in their address books and send
solicitations to 10 of their friends - surely they have talked about your
institution with them. Send membership solicitations to previous visitors
(using guest books) and lapsed members. Put something in your newsletter to
encourage current member to invite a friend to join (maybe some kind of
premium for this)
Setting up tables at events is a great idea-- add a some sort of discount or
small token so that they are compelled to join right there instead of taking
the brochure home with them- maybe a mug or extra passes for their friends.
Hope these help. Best wishes on your drive!
Amy Cunningham
