Alas, I have been accused of taking a shot at the original poster of the
details of the alleged theft of items from the Dutch Museum. I apologize for
having given that impression, but, as one often learns happens with e-mails,
the reason for my '(sic)' was not at all what was apparently conveyed. I
truly thought the poster was adding a bit of humor with a 'trail/trial'
joke. I am also frequently asked to do simple copyediting and I try to be
careful to repeat the author's words when I am quoting them. I am sorry that
I misinterpreted the intent (or lack thereof) in the original post title.
Nonetheless, I am still gravely concerned about the alarming assertions
being posted to a public forum before the verdict (not the sentencing) has
been issued ... whether the country in question has a policy of guilt or
innocence until proven otherwise. My own unintentional gaffe underscores why
I am uncomfortable with the accusations.
As I noted before, if the information is all proven to be true, it is a
great, great tragedy and you have my even-more-profound sympathies. I would
also appreciate learning all the details of the matter once it is all over.
Lynne, with apologies
