Volunteer for anything you can afford to do and want to do, while working
wherever you can. Let your museum know that you would be interested in
working for them as paid staff. Go to any and all conferences that you can
related to your interest so that you can meet people (yes, I know you have
to sacrifice to do this). Apply regardless of the 3-5 years experience
requirement and remind the interviwer, that if you are selected for the
position you possess the knowledge of the latest techniques and practices as
well as dynamic interest in your chosen field. Be positive, positive,
positive. Then work "like crazy" to earn the respect that you want in
whatever position you are able to attain.
Best of luck!

Subject: Re: experience for entry level positions
I wouldn't let the 3-5 years thing deter you from
applying for positions. A lot of times education can
make up for the lack professional experience. Not all
of us in this profession have master's degrees. I
would think that your degrees would count for
something. Also, when I moved to Washington DC, I did
a behind the scenes volunteer program. Most of the
museums down here hire from within. It's a great way
to meet people and if you're in the right place at the
right time.... If you don't get hired by the museum
you're volunteering/interning at, ask your supervisor
if you can put them down as a reference and definitely
include the internship/volunteering on your resume.
Best of Luck,
Lisa Holley
