Impact Communications developed a multimedia program for the Western
Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland as part of an exhibition about
period costumes from famous horror films called "Fiendish Fashions." In
this program, visitors select a costume to "wear" (virtually), take
their picture, size/position their head to fit the costume, select an
eerie background, enter their name, and print out a movie poster to take
home as a souvenir.
We used a standard printer with high-resolution paper. A slit allowed
the poster to pass through to the visitor while the printer was
protected within the kiosk. Print time was approximately one minute,
long enough to provide a high quality piece with the added benefit of
discouraging visitor waste.
The only maintenance problem encountered was the daily replenishing of
paper in the printer - a small price to pay for a very popular
interactive exhibit!
We considered creating a wireless network to the gift shop so posters
could be printed there and the cost of supplies recouped by charging a
few dollars. For this particular exhibit it worked better to have the
immediate visitor gratification of an on-board printer.
